Here’s how we rank Major League Baseball’s Nike City Connect uniforms from boring to brash

If you’ve spent some time in Houston over the past few weeks, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the Astros’ Space City uniforms are a huge hit. The jerseys, t-shirts and hats appear to be everywhere, which the Astros confirmed Wednesday when they sent out a press release reporting that the day the Space City gear went on sale was the second-biggest non -Their team store’s all-time Game Day sales were trailing only the day after the team won the 2017 World Series.

The Space City uniforms are part of the Nike City Connect project, in which Nike and each Major League Baseball team work together to create a uniform that appropriately and creatively represents their community. Seven teams wore City Connect uniforms last season and seven more will unveil their new uniforms this season, with only the Nationals and Astros showing theirs so far. The Royals (April 30), Rockies (June 4), Angels (June 11), Brewers (June 24) and Padres (July 8) are yet to come.

The Astros, who have incredible Houston-related detailing throughout their gear, will wear their Space City uniforms for the first time against the Angels on Wednesday night.

We’ve taken the nine City Connect uniforms we’ve seen so far and ranked them from worst to first…

9. Dodgers

Did the Dodgers’ City Connect uniform designer get the job the night before it was due? It’s way too close to the Dodgers’ regular jerseys – which are admittedly pretty cute – but shows some creativity instead of just putting “Los Dodgers” on the front. And that Los Dodgers hat is just plain ugly.

8. Giants

The designer gets a plus for the cool Golden Gate Bridge silhouette on the sleeves and on the side of the caps, but the narrow G logo? swing and a miss. They also smell, playing with a gradient along the bottom of the logo and the bridge on the sleeves to give a sense of ever-present Bay Area fog. Surely there are cooler things than fog in San Francisco, right?

7. Boys

This one is probably further down the list simply because they were outclassed by rival White Sox. ‘Wrigleyville’ is cool when splattered on the front and the navy jersey with matching pants is eye-catching. The light blue accents depicting the Chicago flag are also a nice touch, but it’s still all a bit boring.

6. Diamond markers

The Diamondbacks stayed with their usual team colors — Sedona Red and Sonoran Sand — but flipped them to make the gold-colored Sonoran Sand the main color and make the red more of an accent. The cap’s tip to their Hispanic fanbase by changing the name to “Serpientos” is way cooler than “Los Dodgers.”

5. Marlin

These varsities pay homage to the Havana Sugar Kings, the Cincinnati Reds’ Grade AAA team stationed in Cuba in the 1950s. They’re a hit with South Florida’s large Cuban population, and everyone else is just glad the designers didn’t opt for an overtly obvious nod to Miami Vice.

4.Red Sox

This is probably the most controversial of all City Connect designs, just because of the fans’ affinity with traditional Red Sox varsities and the big step away from that tradition with these uniforms. As odd as it is to see the Red Sox in yellow and blue, it’s a nod to the Boston Marathon and Patriots’ Day, which is very important to the city.

3. Nationals

Putting pink on the shirts was daring and it just looks really good in combination with the grey. The nod to the city’s cherry blossoms suits the area perfectly, and far better than trying to go for something presidential.

2. Astros

The all-navy look is sharp, and the hat, which features the team’s iconic Star H logo but with a rainbow gradient and planetary tracks around it, is possibly the best of all the City Connect options. The NASA-inspired font works really well, and the number on the pant leg is a cool nod to the Astros uniforms of the 1970s too.

1. White socks

Southside in that gray gothic script makes these uniforms unbeatable and popular with anyone who lives on the Southside of any city (call Alief, Texas). Even the head-to-toe black with pinstripes is simply razor-sharp.
