Oilers, Flames, Red Wings, Sharks

In today’s NHL gossip, chatter has increased when it comes to Evander Kane and how likely the Edmonton Oilers are to find a way to keep him after this season. In the meantime, can the Calgary Flames find a way to sign both Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk?

Rumors are coming out of Detroit about the Red Wings’ summer plans and who will the San Jose Sharks hire as their next GM?

Oilers to find a way to keep Kane?

With four points and a hat-trick on Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche, Evander Kane hit 20 goals in 39 games for the Oilers this season. He is now one of seven players with at least 20 goals in seven straight seasons. As a former TSN host Paul Almeida wrote on Twitter: “Something tells me Connor will sit down with Ken Holland at the end of the season and strongly suggest they find a way to terminate Evander Kane.”

At the same time, Kane scoring 20 points means his future contract has become much more expensive. The fact he’s on track for 40+ goals in an 82-game season means he’s in for a sizeable pay rise and teams will be eyeing him on the free hand. Mark Spector wrote before Kane scored his 20th goal on Friday night: “With 19 goals in half a season, budding UFA Kane will be paid like a 35-40 goalscorer this summer. Sorry, but there’s no way EDM can fit him under their cap.

In other Oilers news, Darnell Nurse was injured during the second period of Friday’s game and did not return for the third. Head coach Jay Woodcroft said it was a lower body injury but could not give an update, saying only Nurse would be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Flames want to find a way to sign Tkachuk and Gaudreau

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, there is an “almost insatiable appetite” for extensions for Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. He says: “They are simple, they are so important for the organization to move forward.”

He says the problem is that these guys will probably have $20 million at their disposal and in an honest negotiation the Flames will find out very quickly how much these two players will cost. He reckons both players could consider hometown discounts, but these won’t be the kinds of savings fans think would come with such a gesture. He adds, “…there will have to be some magical maneuvering, but once again I know that both sides have an appetite to achieve something.”

Some updates from the Red Wings organization

According to Detroit Hockey Now’s Kevin Allen and Bob Duff, no one thinks head coach Jeff Blashill will return as bench boss for the Red Wings next season. Allen noted that sources suggest GM Steve Yzerman may be considering some tough, demanding coaching candidates if he replaces Blashill.

They also note Yzerman’s priority this summer is bringing in a second centre-back and an experienced second-back. Targets Detroit could consider include New York Rangers’ Andrew Copp and Carolina Hurricanes’ Vincent Trocheck. Duff said he also heard Yzerman could target left winger Filip Forsberg if he goes to the open market.

As for possible trades, both Tyler Bertuzzi and Filip Zadina could dangle for the right yield. Bertuzzi is a year away from UFA status and Zadina is an RFA this offseason.

Sharks GM Search News

The San Jose Sharks have begun reaching out to teams for permission to interview candidates to fill their GM vacancy. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun recently reported insider trading Segment that initial list is nearly 25 names long. He says they will narrow it down before phone interviews begin, which could take place as early as next week.

I’ve seen a few names related to San Jose out there. Not sure how fast the process is going and the timeline etc but I would keep an eye on the name Kevin Weekes (@KevinWeekes )

One name to keep an eye on could be ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, according to reports Lisa Dillman from The Athletic. She noted he’s someone that teams have been keeping an eye on, and the former goalie has recently been interviewed for several GM openings. Someone will eventually give him an opportunity.
