Muscat: MCCP organizes annual Badminton tournament

Muscat, April 26: The Mangalorean Catholic Center of the Parish (MCCP) led by Team-28 recently hosted an exciting MCCP Annual Badminton Tournament at the Indian Social Club, Darsait.

The enormous popularity of the game ensured a large gathering of members and their families creating an electrifying atmosphere. Young and old from the community competed with tremendous enthusiasm and panache with real sportsmanship.

The program began at 9:15 am with registration and breakfast for attendees and their families present at the venue. The games began after the opening prayer and address by the Spiritual Director, Father Marian Miranda. Donald Pinto, one of the strongest pillars and members of the MCCP’s Core Committee, and his wife, Eula Pinto, who is the MCCP’s longest serving member and passionate supporter, were guests of honor.

In memory of the late Sharon Alva, the internal auditor of MCCP Team 28, who departed for Heaven on March 12, 2022, a two-minute silent prayer was held by all assembled to pay tribute to his great soul. His support for humanity and the wider community was gratefully remembered.

President Jessie Vivian Pereira and Executive Committee members Tressy Menezes, Reshma D. Costa, Merita D. Souza, Silvia Fernandes, Praveen Serra and Vikas Fernandes have made their tremendous efforts to ensure all necessary arrangements are made at the venue. Culture Secretary Praveen Serra acted as master of ceremonies of the event.
The President, Jessie Vivian Pereira, Father Marian Miranda, Eula Pinto and Donald Pinto played the opening bat, heralding the opening of the Mangalorean community’s highly anticipated tournament.

The tournament was divided into six categories, including U13 doubles, U18 doubles, U40 men’s doubles, U40 mixed doubles, U40 men’s doubles and U40 women’s doubles. The tournament received an overwhelming response, with a total of 27 teams registered for the tournament. Members were asked to pre-register on the MCCP website, which was overseen by Sports Secretary Reshma D Costa to ensure all attendees’ names were well tabulated for the Games to run quickly and smoothly.

Dolly Gomes, a fervent supporter of the MCCP and a great sports lover, took charge of the games, drawing lots first in each category, followed by sequencing the games to ensure a smooth execution of the games on the two badminton courts available at the venue.
Vinod Abraham and Gururaj B were the referees.

Under 13 doubles:

Runners: Calida Rodrigues and Lianne Saldanha

Double under 18:
Winners: Christine Angeline Danthi and Amanda Dcosta
Runners: Anisha Dcosta and Leanne Alva

Men’s doubles – under 40:
Winners: Arul Lobo and Jackson Mendonca
Runners: Jason Cardoza and Loyson Dsouza

Mixed Doubles – Under 40:
Winners: Joel Dsouza and Reshma D Costa
Runners: Suneel Menezes and Rinet Menezes

Men’s doubles – over 40:
Winners: Sunil Prakash Dalmeida and Sunil Alwyn Dsouza
Runners: Ronnie Pereira and Cyril Danthi

Women’s doubles – over 40:
Winners: Preethi Dmello and Flavia Dsouza
Runners: Flavia Dsouza and Anitha Danthi

The winners of the annual crib competition, which has been held for the past 3 years, were also congratulated during the event.

A sumptuous lunch was provided for the participants and those present at the venue during the event. Before the audience and participants dispersed for a lunch, Silvia Dias offered pre-meal clemency.

The event was sponsored by Steevan Andrade. The juice, water, milk and Laban drink were sponsored by Mazoon Dairy Company SAOC. MCCP thanked Dr. Satish Nambiar and the ISC team for providing the venue.

The MCCP Executive Committee was indebted to the participants and sponsors for their unwavering support of the tournament, which made it a memorable event.
