Benedictine, Savannah Christian baseball advanced to quarterfinals

After losing the first game of its playoff series to Northwest Whitfield in the second round, the Benedictine baseball team found their backs to the wall on Tuesday.

But a senior class led by Justin Thomas wouldn’t let up.

Benedictine Baseball: Justin Thomas is poised for final playoff heat as many MLB teams look on

Thomas, the gifted midfielder who signed with the University of Georgia, had a streak that will not be forgotten, hitting a homer in each of the three games. In Game 2, Thomas went 3 for 4 with two home runs, a triple, three RBIs and four runs scored. His second home run in the 16-6 win was his 14th of the year, breaking the Benedictine season home run record set by good friend Carter Holton last year.

“This is the best streak I’ve ever had,” said Thomas, who hit 6 for 10 with four homers, the triple, five RBIs and seven runs. “And the win means a lot to us. It gives us energy and momentum for the next round. We will play with the same attitude.”

Benedictine (28-5) will host a three-game series with Troup County (24-10), who defeated Marist, who beat BC in the 2021 state finals. The Quarterfinals matchup begins with a doubleheader on Monday in BC, with a start time to be announced.

Freshman pitcher Landon Ludwig made a strong showing to earn the Game 2 win and Robert Carver went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs.
