The weekly race has plenty of submissions to kick off the Next Play compilation of our trusted KC with leaked local sports stories…
But if it’s a race, what better place to start than the race, right? And we have some in our forecast as the Kansas Speedway hosts the first of its two annual NASCAR weekends.
If the Chiefs are your main concern, skip to their entry in this week’s Overview (they’re in the middle of their annual rookie mini-camp); or, if you’re your favorite royals, check out their road trip lineup for the week; Football fans will also get their money’s worth here, as Sporting KC and KC Current each play two games.
Enough wind. Here comes the pitch…
Drivers (and fans), start your engines
Racing will be loud and proud on Saturday at the Tarmac Oval in Kansas City, Kansas, with a doubleheader lineup on Saturday and Main Event Sunday.
First up on Saturday are the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Heart of America 200 and the ARCA Menards Series Dutch Boy 150. The latter is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.; The green flag is scheduled to fall at 7am for the Trucks Race.
On Sunday, the track parking lots will open promptly at 9:00 am, with various celebrations leading up to the 2:00 pm start of the AdventHealth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race
Rookie mini camping with Chiefs
The Chiefs kicked off their annual three-day rookie mini-camp at their Arrowhead Stadium training complex on Saturday.
The camp continues today (Sunday) and ends on Monday. The team’s coaching staff is getting to know the newest players a little better as those players begin to receive their indoctrination into programs run by the franchise, which won a Super Bowl two years ago and is yearning for another championship.
Next on the Chiefs’ NFL calendar are the OTAs, which are optional but strongly encouraged to attend: May 25-26, May 31-June 2, and June 7-10. Not to be too far ahead, but next is the team’s mandatory mini-camp (June 14-16), followed by training camp at the end of July.
Royals on the way
The royals find themselves in the middle of a sprawling street swing. They play outside of Kauffman Stadium until Monday, May 16.
Here’s the schedule. Today they wrap up a series against the Orioles in Baltimore. They have Monday off. Then it’s on to Arlington, Texas for three games against Rangers Tuesday through Thursday. After that, they travel to Denver for three games (Friday through next Sunday) against the Colorado Rockies.
They return home to begin a series against the Chicago White Sox a week beginning Monday.
Soccer Two-Fer, Take I: Sporting
Sporting KC have two games scheduled this week – including a midweek home game against FC Dallas, an opponent they drew here just a week ago.
This time the match between Sporting and Dallas is part of the Round of 32 in the annual Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Kick-off time for the rematch (last time it was 2-2) is Tuesday at 19:30.
Then, Sporting will continue their regular-season MLS campaign on Saturday with a game at 9 p.m. Central Time in Portland.
Soccer Two-Fer, Take II: Current
The KC Current is playing its NWSL home opener of the regular season at Children’s Mercy Park today. Their opponent is the Houston Dash for the third time this year. Game time is 4 p.m. Central.
Heading to Florida on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. Central game in Orlando. The Current started the year strong with a strong preseason show in the Sunshine State and will look to use that kind of energy on their return visit against Pride.
