Richmond shuts out Armada, ties for BWAC soccer lead – Macomb Daily

It’s a new football race in the Blue Water Area Conference.

Alyssa Sweeney scored in the first half and Kaylee Backers stopped every shot Armada sent her to lead Richmond to a 1-0 win that meant a tie for first place on Wednesday.

Liz Kocher played the ball into the box and Sweeney converted the scoring chance with 31:03 in the first half as the Blue Devils extended their record to 8-1-1 – the same as Armada’s after the teams’ first clash of the season .

“We had to beat them to win the championship,” said Backers, a freshman.

“All we did was even the field,” added Richmond coach Steve Schuster.

Backers was particularly busy in the second half. In seven minutes, the Tigers had five chances, including one from close range.

“It was pretty stressful,” Backers said.

An Armada shot went over the bar with 8:39 left, less than a minute after Backers stopped a shot in the box. Later, the keeper, who is one of four ninth-graders in the Blue Devils’ lineup, intercepted a corner kick in mid-air and about six minutes from time, she caught a ball that rolled on goal.

“It was a good game. I thought we checked a lot of that today. I was happy with the way the girls played. We gave up a goal and that cost us,” said Tigers coach Neal Todd.

“Sometimes that’s football.”

The teams will play a night game in Richmond on May 20 – each one of four BWAC games remaining.

This will be Armada’s third conference game this week.

Alongside Armada, Richmond will play Algonac, North Branch and Yale to wrap up the league season. The Tigers play Croswell-Lexington, Almont and Imlay City

“It’s going to be interesting,” Todd said.

Richmond’s conference loss came against Algonac.
