Amit Shah congratulates Indian badminton team for clinching its first-ever Thomas Cup

New Delhi [India]MAY 15 (ANI): Union Home Secretary Amit Shah on Sunday congratulated the Indian badminton team that made history by winning the Thomas Cup trophy for the first time in Thailand.
“India won the Thomas Cup. A momentous day for the Indian badminton team that will go down in the annals of our sporting history. I congratulate our entire team on this great achievement. Every Indian is very proud today,” Shah tweeted.
Many other central and state politicians took to social media to congratulate the team on the monumental victory.
Congratulating the team on the win, Union Secretary of State S. Jaishankar tweeted: “Congratulations #TeamIndia on their historic victory in men’s badminton at the Thomas Cup. A real inspiration for so many young Indians.”
“The Indian badminton team won the Thomas Cup for the first time today by beating Indonesia. Badminton team has brought pride to 130 million Indians with its outstanding performance. Congratulations!” tweeted Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Oil and Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also took to social media to offer his congratulations to the Thomas Cup winning team.
“India’s brilliant show in international sports arenas continues with unbreakable spirit and enthusiasm. Indian Shutters made history by winning the first ever Thomas Cup final. Heartiest congratulations to our champions!” he tweeted.
Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Aditynath also tweeted: “Historic victory! Congratulations to the Indian badminton team for winning the Thomas Cup. Best wishes to all team members for a bright future. Jai Hind!.“
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to Twitter to congratulate Thomas Cup winning Team India, saying: “Off to a new high Congratulations to Team India on making history by winning the #ThomasCup, on Badminton team tournament for the first time in the 73-year history of this prestigious team. You have made us all very proud. Hold the flag high @BAI_Media”
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin also congratulated the Indian team. He tweeted: “India wins #ThomasCup for the first time by beating 14-time champions Indonesia. This is a red letter tag for Indian Sports. My heartfelt congratulations to all the players who helped India write this truly historic win.”
The Indian badminton team made history on Sunday by winning the Thomas Cup trophy for the first time.
In India’s first-ever participation in the tournament finals, they defeated record 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final of the 2022 Thomas Cup at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand to lift the coveted trophy.
In its more than 70-year history, no Indian team has reached the final of the Thomas and Uber Cup. The Indian men reached the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup in 1952, 1955 and 1979, while the women’s team made it into the top 4 of the Uber Cup in 2014 and 2016.
India finished second in Group C behind Chinese Taipei and qualified for the knockout rounds, where they topped strong Malaysian and Danish sides in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
Early in the tie, Lakshya Sen took the first point for India after beating Anthony Ginting 8-21 21-17 21-16.
Ginting looked quick, accurate and extremely dangerous in the opening stages, enjoying a twelve-point run and winning the opening game 21-8 in just 17 minutes. But Lakshya Sen reacted brilliantly in the second game and led the match 21-17 to the decisive victory.
Sen completed the comeback by winning the match 8-21 21-17 21-16.
In the second match of the duel, Indonesian scratch duo Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo got off to a good start after winning their opening match 21-18.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then survived four match points to come back and claim the win in game two, 23-21. The Indians won the deciding game to win the match 18-21, 23-21, 21-19.
In the third game of the duel, Indian Kidambi Srikanth won the opening game against Indonesian Jonatan Christie by 21:15 and won the game and the final with a 23:21 victory in the second game.
The Indian team with Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, the doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and others did well at this year’s tournament. (ANI)
