Learn the basics of hockey skating with our year-round Learn to Play Hockey courses, available for both kids and adults. Proper skating technique is paramount and we teach all elements without sticks or pucks. All skaters must wear helmets, hockey skates and full hockey pads. How to register

All participants must complete two steps:

Step 1: Register with Learn to Skate USA. You need your registration number to complete your registration with DU.

Step 2: Register with DU.

Registration for Series 5 (May 7th – June 22nd) is now open.

Learn to play hockey levels & schedules

Series 5: May 7 – June 22*

*No classes on May 28th or 30th and June 1st

These two levels of instruction teach the basics of ice hockey skating to children who have completed Snowplow Sam 3 or Basic 2 of our Learn to Skate program. Skaters in this program learn hockey-specific skating skills, how to maneuver faster and become more agile on the ice.

Proper skating technique is paramount and all elements are taught without a racquet or puck. All players must wear helmets and skates. Hockey pads are optional.

Once Skaters complete Hockey 2, they can advance to the Jr. Pioneers Hockey Pre-Team.

Timetable

Youth Hockey Skating 1 & 2 meet once a week for 30 minute sessions unless otherwise noted. Make-up courses for missed sessions will not be offered.

To sign up for Learn to Play Hockey, you must complete two steps:

  1. Register with Learn to Skate USA. Each participant must be registered with Learn to Skate USA. We recommend that you print and keep the confirmation number of each participant.
  2. Register with DU. During the registration process, you will need to enter your Learn to Skate verification code from Step 1.

Jr. Pioneers Hockey Pre-Team is an introduction to team play and includes sessions to work on skating skills, as well as beginner-level stick handling, shooting and passing skills. It is a bridge between our Learn to Play Hockey program and the Jr. Pioneers hockey teams.

Players must wear full hockey gear, a helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey pants with padding, and a hockey stick. Ice hockey shoes are also required and can be rented from DU. Players will also receive a jersey and hockey socks.

It is recommended that players complete Hockey Skating 2 before registering for Pre-Team. Once players complete Pre-Team, they can advance to Jr. Pioneers Hockey 8U teams.

Jr. Pioneers Hockey Pre-Team meets a total of two hours per week unless otherwise noted. Make-up courses for missed sessions will not be offered.

To register for the Jr. Pioneers Hockey Pre-Team, you must complete two steps:

  1. Sign up for USA Hockey online. Each participant must be registered with USA Hockey. We recommend that you print and keep the confirmation number of each participant.
  2. Register with DU. During the registration process, you will need to enter your USA Hockey verification code from Step 1.

Our beginner, intermediate and advanced 8U teams follow a traditional hockey season through Jr. Pioneers Hockey.

Learning Hockey for Adults are intended for those who may have found their calling a little later in life.

Learn to Play Hockey offers three progressive grade levels and focuses on the fundamental skills of hockey – power skating, stick handling, passing and shooting.

The program is designed to help participants develop the skills needed for recreational or competitive play. Full hockey equipment (including helmet, gloves, shin guards, elbow pads and stick) is required.

Timetable

Adult Learn to Play Hockey 101 & 201 meets once a week for 60 minute sessions unless otherwise noted. Make-up courses for missed sessions will not be offered.
