Baseball: Ridgewater heads to the Super Regional – West Central Tribune

ST. CLOUD — Tyler Hebrink thought a big accomplishment in his freshman season would be to finish strong and earn a regional spot.

Anything more than that would be exceptional.

It’s safe to say that the Ridgewater baseball team had an exceptionally good weekend.

The Warriors won two elimination games to earn a spot in this week’s Super Regional in St. Cloud.

Ridgewater defeated Riverland 11-1 in five innings and then stunned Century 13-12 in 10 innings to advance.

The Warriors (16-18) made it through despite playing their first games in three years and finishing No. 7 in the 10-team Region XIII tournament.

“That’s exactly it,” said Ridgewater head coach Hebrink. “When the seed came out, right after we beat Riverland three out of four, Riverland had a higher seed than us.

“I think a lot of the guys were really upset about that. A few teams had seeded us as No. 8 or No. 9 in the region. That’s all the boys need.”

Ridgewater is advancing as the second seed from the region. Central Lakes College is the first seed. The Warriors play South leaders Rochester Thursday at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex. CLC also plays St. Cloud Technical & Community College in the double-elimination tournament on Thursday. Game times are yet to be announced.

At stake is a seat in the NJCAA Division III World Series at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Against Riverland, Ridgewater had 11 hits, including a two-run homer by No. 9 Reece Schwirtz and a 3-for-4 performance by Brad Bickmann, who also scored the pitching win.

In the Century game, Ridgewater fell behind 12-7 before recovering. The Warriors scored one run in the seventh, four in the ninth to tie it and another in the tenth to win.

“We knew it was going to be a slugfest,” Hebrink said.

Bickmann, Tyler Traphagen, Seth Resnick and Nolan Spence all had three goals for the Warriors. Bennett Knapper hit a home run for Ridgewater. The Granite Falls newcomer went 2-for-4 with two walks, three runs and an RBI.

“There’s something about this team,” said Hebrink, who was hired in the fall of 2019 only to see the 2020 and 21 seasons canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I played and coached in the Junior College World Series (as an assistant at St. Cloud). And I can tell you that I’ve never been on a team that had better chemistry or was that close. It was really a pleasure. They really enjoy being together even when things get difficult. They fight hard for each other.”

The win came against a Century College roster coached by former Ridgewater head coach Dwight Kotila, who led the Warriors to the World Series before starting the college’s baseball program at White Bear Lake.
