Things to do around Hamilton and what’s closed over the Victoria Day long weekend.

Your long Victoria Day weekend is finally here, whether the weather is ready or not.

It looks like the summer heat on Friday and Saturday will drop to around 20 degrees on Sunday and Monday as showers move through the area. You’ll need a raincoat or umbrella just in case, but be sure to pack some sunscreen on Monday.

Here are some things to do and what’s open and closed over the long weekend.

The great nature

  • Beginners and experts alike will want to join James Lees, bird expert for the Hamilton Conservation Authority, on a guided walk in search of birds and other wildlife in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. On this slow, 3-hour hike, you’ll be sure to learn about bird identification, birdsong, behavior and all about where the birds come from and where they go. Registration is required for this weekend’s hike on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost is $25 for non-members. at www.conservationhamilton.ca/birdhikes

Purple Valley

Immerse yourself in the sweet scent of lilac. The lilac collection is in full bloom at the Royal Botanical Gardens. With over 1,000 individual lilacs representing several hundred varieties, RBG’s collection is one of the most diverse collections of lilacs in the world. The arboretum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Timed ticket registration is required for parking at the Arboretum, 16 Old Guelph Rd., Hamilton. Cost is $30 per vehicle or free for members. Members require a reservation. Parking at the Arboretum does not include access to the regular garden entrance. rbg.approx

  • Free tours are offered daily at 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30pm. Meeting point at the start of the Lilac Walk.

The Royal Botanical Gardens are hosting the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor: Renewal Art Show at the RBG Centre, 680 Plains Rd. W until June 12th. It’s included in your general admission price, open 10am to 8pm, last entry at 7.

Live concert

See violinists Michael Schulte and Toronto Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jonathan Crow up close and personal in violin duos for the ultimate musical talk at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, 123 King St. W. on Monday at 7:30pm. Tickets at Chambermusicamilton.com

Noises of Concession Street

Sidewalk Sounds returns to Concession Street on Saturday. Hamilton artists, musicians and dancers will perform two-hour shows at four locations along the street, starting at 11am and ending at 4pm

Bread and Cheese Festivals

Bread and Cheese Day is back for 2022. It will be held at the Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre, 1738 Fourth Line, Ohsweken. The fireworks will be set off around 9:45 p.m. on Sunday evening. And the Tom Longboat 1 mile race takes place on Monday at 11:00 am and the parade is expected to follow at 11:30 am. Community members are encouraged to wear a mask in the Bread & Cheese line and if you are not comfortable please do not participate.

The Hamilton Public Library, Central Branch in downtown Hamilton hosts an Indigenous market on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. hpl.approx

Celebrate World Fish Migration Day on Saturday. Walk along Hamilton’s Waterfront Trail to RBG’s Fishway. Watch RBG ecologists at work as they help fish fish to their spawning grounds in Cootes Paradise Marsh. The Fishway is designed to keep invasive carp out of the swamp but allow water and native fish to move between the two bodies of water. Good travel times are 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Parking is available at Princess Point or at Hamilton Harbor Waterfront Park on Bay Street. You have to walk to the Fishway.

family fun

Burlington Family Fun hosts a morning of family activities on Sundays from 10am to 12pm in La Salle Park, Area 2, including face painting, crafts, cookies and of course coffee. Tickets start at $5 at eventbrite.ca.

Nothing says summer fun like a night out at the drive-thru. Take a spin at Hamilton’s Starlite Drive In this weekend. Just note that they are closed on Mondays. The box office opens at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This weekend’s programming includes: On Screen 1: The Bad Guys at 9pm, Sonic the Hedghog 2 at 10:50pm and The Lost City at 12:55am. Fireworks

The Hamilton Fire Service is reminding residents to light and dispose of fireworks safely to minimize the risk of fires and burns.

Family fireworks may only be fired on private property between dusk and 11pm on Victoria Day (or in inclement weather – during the same period of the day immediately following each bank holiday) in accordance with the fireworks statute. Setting off fireworks on public or municipal property such as roadways or in parks is not permitted and may result in a fine.

  • Fireworks at Dundas Driving Park canceled for 2022. The city and Rotary Club announced that the annual Victoria Day celebration and fireworks display at the park will be canceled, but hope to return in 2023.

  • Celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend with fireworks over Niagara Falls. The displays run every evening at 10:00 p.m. starting Saturday.

Their Hamilton Bulldogs take on the North Bay Battalion in Games 1 and 2 of the Ontario Hockey League Eastern Conference Championship Series on Friday and Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the FirstOntario Center

Rock Lacrosse is back in town this weekend. Don’t miss the Saturday pre-game party from 4:00-6:00 p.m. before Game 2 of the East Conference Finals at the FirstOntario Centre. Open and closed

Victoria Day weekend is here. Monday is a public holiday and here’s a look at what’s open and what’s not.

  • Government offices and libraries are closed and mail is not being delivered.
  • Most grocery stores and pharmacies will be closed.
  • LCBO stores are closed, but select Beer Store locations are open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m
  • Lime Ridge, Eastgate, Burlington Center and Mapleview malls will be closed.
  • The HSR operates according to a Sunday timetable. DARTS will offer service hours during the Holidays. GO Transit operates on Saturdays.
  • In Hamilton and Halton there will be no garbage collection on Monday, but a day later than regularly scheduled.
  • The AGH is open on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is closed on Mondays.
  • Hamilton City Museums are closed on Mondays.

  • Hamilton Farmers Market is closed on Mondays.
