Baseball roundup: Willmar falls in nine at Becker – West Central Tribune

BECKER — It took Becker nine innings to pick a winner and eventually broke through for a walkoff win.

Nolan Murphy led from the bottom of ninth with a single, made it to second with a walk and then hit third with a wild pitch. Jase Tobako hit a victim fly to send Murphy home as the Bulldogs earned Friday’s 9-8 non-conference baseball win over Willmar.

Playing in her fourth game this week, Willmar put on three runs on top of the second to build a 4-1 lead. They went up 7-2 through six and a half innings before Becker put up three runs at the bottom of the sixth. After the Cardinals scored again in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs brought home three more runs in the bottom half to extend the game.

Sam Etterman upped the pace on Willmar’s offense, going 3-on-4 with five RBIs and two stolen bases. Brandt Sunder and Alex Schramm each had two goals. Sunder was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Schramm hit three times and stole two bases by going 2-on-4.

Murphy was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two steals for Becker. Brady Taylor drove in three runs and went 1-for-4 with a double.

Sergio Fernandez started the game on the mound for the Cardinals, going 6-1/3 innings without a decision. Taylor clinched the win for the Bulldogs after 3-2/3 innings of relief.

In new state polls released Friday, Willmar ranks seventh in the AAA class and has two more games in the regular season. The Cardinals travel to Cold Spring on Monday to face Rocori and then host Big Lake on Tuesday night.

Fourth-placed (Class AA) Paynesville drove to a five-inning win over Minnewaska at Glenwood.

Eli Nelson gave the Bulldogs the win by hitting eight and holding the Lakers to three hits and one walk for four innings. Nelson also went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs, and two RBIs. Grayson Fuchs hit a three-run home run in the third and finished the race 1-2 with three runs and three RBIs.

Jacob Blair, Torii Johnson and PJ Johnson all had hits for Minnewaska.

A four-run top of the sixth inning helped New London-Spicer handle a late Morris/Chokio-Alberta rally to secure a non-conference win at Morris.

Gavin Degner finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Wildcats. Aedan Andresen was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Grant Paffrath pitched all seven innings for NLS and hit three in the win.

Kaiden Allpress and Davis Patzer together held Benson on a hit as Lac qui Parle Valley clinched the five-inning non-conference win in Madison.

Allpress started the game and hit seven in four innings. Patzer threw a shotless fifth and hit two.

Landon Schirm was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Eagles. Ethan Schommer drove two runs and finished the race 1:2 with a double.

Dylan Ascheman had the Braves’ only hit.

It took MACCRAY five innings to wrap up the out-of-conference win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at Raymond.

Isaac Strommer led the way for the Wolverines. He went 3-for-4 with two carries and two RBI.

Will Van Beck and Gavin Kampsen had two goals each in Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in Elrosa.

Van Beck scored three goals and also went 2-on-3. Kampsen drove three runs and also scored once, also 2-on-3.

Van Beck also got the pitching win in the five-inning game by going three innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He allowed one hit and no runs.

Camden Anderson and Ben Bye, along with a one-hitter, led the West Central Area past BOLD at Bird Island.

Anderson went 6-2/3 innings, batting nine and walking five. He conceded a hit and an unearned run. Bye got out of the final after walking a batter.

West Central Area scored at the bottom of seventh, but Max Benson came on for the save to Tate Sheehan’s relief. Benson walked two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking one.

Wylee Lottman and Jared Cortez each had big games as Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg defeated Renville County West at Sunburg.

Lottman clinched the pitching win with relief, throwing four innings scoreless. He hit seven, walked one and conceded a hit. Cortez finished the game and pitched the last two innings. He hit four and didn’t allow a punch or a walk.

At the plate, Lottman was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Cortez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI.

Griffin Howard, Tyler Froland, Tyler Amsden and Jack Wertish had hits for RCW.
