A rejuvenated India, no longer viewed as a pushover, would retaliate against England when the two sides open their Pool B campaign at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2022 on Sunday. The encounter between the Indian women and the English women will be broadcast live in India from 20.00 IST. (More Ice Hockey News)
The Indian women’s ice hockey team would be keen to settle accounts against a side that dashed their hopes of a bronze medal at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. India came close to winning their first Olympic medal, only to lose 4-3 to England, who play as Great Britain in the top flight.
But ahead of the tournament, the Indians would be feeling very confident, especially after finishing a respectable third in their first FIH Pro League appearance. India’s best performance at the Ice Hockey World Championships was a fourth-place finish at the inaugural 1974 edition.
But since achieving an historic fourth place finish at the Tokyo Games, the team has enjoyed phenomenal rise. The Indian women’s team achieved their best-ever world ranking in sixth place in May and then fought for their money in the FIH Pro League against some of the world’s top teams.
The Indian team finished on the podium ahead of strong teams like Belgium, Australia and England. Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia has performed his captaincy duties with flying colors since taking charge of Rani Rampal, who has been sidelined since the Tokyo games with a hamstring injury.
Savita has been in superb form while she will have young and energetic support in Bichu Devi Kharibam. The defensive line will be under the watchful eye of vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit Kaur, Udita and Nikki Pradhan, while responsibility for building the attacks rests on the shoulders of Sushila Chanu, Neha Goyal, Navjot Kaur, Sonika, Jyoti, Nisha and Monika .

Salima Tete, who has been in superb form and is known for electrifying runs down the flanks, must play the connecting role. Responsibility for scoring lies with experienced Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and Sharmila Devi.
Despite being a well-established squad, India will definitely miss Rani’s experience and services. India finished eighth at the last edition in 2018 but they are hoping for their first podium finish in this edition of the tournament and judging by their form and recent results it’s definitely not impossible.
England’s best result at the World Cup is a bronze medal at the 2010 edition in Rosario, Argentina. They also finished fourth in Sydney in 1990. Hardly anything can be distinguished between the two sides. England is fourth in the world rankings, India sixth.
head to head
The English women are far ahead of the Indian women when it comes to head-to-head records. In seven games between the two sides, England have won three and lost one. Three games ended in a draw.
