Liga MX 2022 standings table, scores and updated schedule of games for Apertura season

After a 70-year drought, it’s hard to believe that Atlas is aiming for his third straight Liga MX title in the 2022 Apertura. After lifting the trophy in the 2021 Apertura and 2022 Clausura, Los Zorros aim to become the first team since Club America in the 1980s to accomplish the feat in Mexico.

The other 17 clubs in Mexico’s top flight will play the role of double decker under coach Diego Cocca in the battle for Atlas’ continued dominance. Apertura 2022 begins on Friday, July 1st and the 17-game regular season ends on Sunday, October 2nd. Three midweeks ensure the full Liguilla playoff schedule can be played ahead of the November break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

What’s at stake: Only the top 12 teams reach the playoffs in Liga MX. The top four advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the other eight teams (#5 through #12) meet in a play-in round hosted by the higher-seeded players to determine the other four quarter-finalists.

  • aperture reg. Season starts: 1 July (Matchday 1)
  • aperture reg. Season end: 2 Oct (Matchday 17)
  • Liguilla Play-In Matches: 7th-8th Oct. (single elimination)
  • Liguilla Quarterfinals: 12-16 Oct. (1st & 2nd stage)
  • Liguilla semi-finals: 19-23 Oct. (1st & 2nd stage)
  • Liguilla final: 27-30 Oct. (1st & 2nd stage)

Why regular season standings matter: They come into play during the playoff quarterfinals and semifinals series, which take place over two legs. The team with the most goals in both games advances. However, if the teams are tied on the total number of goals scored at the end of that second leg, the Club that finished better in the regular season placements will advance. This tiebreaker rule disappears for the finalewhere teams may go to overtime and a penalty shootout.

Here’s the latest Liga MX Apertura season schedule and results, followed by the updated leaderboard that outlines the race for playoff spots and seeding.

Liga MX 2022 Apertura Ranking

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs. Rankings are based on points accumulated in the 17 regular-season games: three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. In the event of a tie on points, the following tiebreakers will be used in this specific order as per the Official Rules (page 9):

1. Outstanding goal difference
2. Most goals scored
3. Most goals scored away from home
4. Head-to-head matchups between the tied teams
5. Best placement in the “Ratio” rating (points per game in the last six seasons)
6. Fair play ranking (based on received yellow and red cards)
7. Random Draw

Taking these tiebreakers into account, the updated table looks like this:
