New England Revolution acquire forward Giacomo Vrioni from Juventus FC as Designated Player

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has fought its way forward Giacomo Vrioni (YES-co-MO vree-OWN-nee) from Italian Serie A club Juventus FC and signed the Italian-born Albanian striker to a designated player contract with an additional one-year club option until the 2025 MLS season. Vrioni, 23, will take New England’s third and final spot as a designated player, as well as an international squad spot until he receives his visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Vrioni comes to New England after scoring 19 goals in Austria’s Bundesliga, which was on loan to WSG Tirol in the 2021/22 season and took the lead in the league. With 17 regular-season results and four more in the Europa League play-offs and domestic cup, Vrioni has netted 21 goals with five assists in 30 games in all competitions for the Austrian club. Before his loan, the San Severino Marche native of Italy played 13 matches between the senior Juventus FC team in Serie A and the under-23 side in Serie C.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Giacomo Vrioni to a long-term contract with New England Revolution. Giacomo caught our eye with his recent goal in Austria and has been highly recommended by some truly outstanding people in our sport,” said Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. “I look forward to Giacomo arriving in New England and working with him. He is a most welcome addition to our team.”

“I’m excited to start this next chapter of my life and career in Boston and Major League Soccer with the New England Revolution,” said Vrioni. “I’ve seen a lot of talented players from Europe achieve success in MLS, so I think this is the right time to take this step in my career. I look forward to meeting all my new teammates, coaches and the Revolution supporters soon.”

Vrioni started his career in the Matelica Calcio youth team in his native Marche province before playing for Italian clubs Sampdoria, Pistoiese, Venezia and Cittadella. The forward shone with Sampdoria Primavera (U19), recording 17 goals and six assists in 50 games from 2015-17. Vrioni joined Venezia FC for the 2018/19 season and made 24 appearances in Serie B.

A dual citizen of Italy and Albania, Vrioni represented the Italy national youth teams at U18 and U19 levels before switching allegiances to represent Albania. Vrioni has capped six senior caps for Albania national team since his debut in 2018, including four appearances in the UEFA Nations League. He played his last international match in June 2022 in a friendly against Estonia.

Details of Vrioni’s launch press conference will be announced shortly. Vrioni will be eligible to play for New England after MLS’ summer transfer window officially opens on July 7. With Vrioni set to fill the Revolution’s third designated player spot and the forward turning 24 later this year, the Revolution will only have one spot available for the Under-22 Initiative, which has been filled by recently acquired midfielder Dylan Borrero.

New England (6-5-7; 25 pts) resumes the 2022 MLS season on Saturday, July 9 when the club visits New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The game begins at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on Univision in Spanish while streaming in English via Twitter.
