Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Announces 2022 Schedule

SAN LUIS OBISPO — With a total of 12 home games at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, four games against an opponent who won 11+ games last year and a Wednesday, Sept. 21, Blue-Green rivalry home showdown against UC Santa Barbara, the Cal Poly men’s football program released its 2022 schedule Thursday afternoon.

With four starters and 12 letterwinners from last season’s team that finished as Big West Conference regular-season runners-up, Cal Poly’s 2022 schedule also includes two first-time opponents in Ohio State and Houston Baptist.

Cal Poly will open preseason training camp Tuesday, August 9 and play its first event on Alex G. Spanos Stadium’s new FieldTurf surface with the program’s annual intrasquad green-gold match on Wednesday, August 10 Aug. The Mustangs then hold exhibitions against Division II Fresno Pacific (Saturday, August 13), UNLV (Tuesday, August 16), and Santa Clara (Saturday, August 20), who advanced to the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament.

The Mustangs open the 2022 regular season Thursday, August 25 at the Wolstein Classic in Ohio State when they face Dayton for the first time in 17 years. Cal Poly wraps up Wolstein Classic action against Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday, August 28th.

After completing its three-game season-opening road trip on Friday, September 2 in Portland — advancing to the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament — Cal Poly welcomes Houston Baptist to Spanos Stadium on Monday, September 5. After a Monday, September 12 visit to San Francisco, Cal Poly is hosting Saint Mary’s on Saturday, September 17 and rival UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, September 21.

The Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara series, the top-attended sporting events in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties annually, has attracted 26 of the top 62 regular-season attendances in NCAA history, with all games in the previous 14 seasons took place. The duel at Spanos Stadium has sold out all 11,075 seats in nine of the last ten seasons. The 18 combined games between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara over the past eight years are 18 of the top 22 attended college football games in the United States — including all NCAA Championship and College Cup games. A total of 292,192 viewers and an average of 9,740 fans per game have watched Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara meet 30 times since the start of the 2007 season.

Twenty of the last 27 games between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara have been decided by a goal or a draw. Seven of Cal Poly’s eight wins in their last 30 tries against UC Santa Barbara have been one-goal triumphs. Twelve of those 30 games since 2007 have gone into overtime. Only four times since 2007 has one team scored as many as three goals against the other (Cal Poly’s 4-1 home win over the Gauchos to close out 2017 was the first time since November 9, 2001 that a team had four goals slipped behind). The Mustangs are unbeaten at home to the Gauchos in nine of the last 12 years, while UC Santa Barbara has lost exactly once at home to Cal Poly in their last 22 games at Harder Stadium.

The Mustangs wrap up Big West preparations with a home game Saturday, Sept. 24, against San Diego — the last of four West Coast Conference opponents on Cal Poly’s schedule.


After finishing two points behind defending Big West regular-season co-champs UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine in standings, Cal Poly, who posted a 5-1-3 conference mark in 2021, opens up Big West action Wednesday at UC Davis, September 28.

The Mustangs will then play two of their next three conference games at home, hosting 2021 Big West Tournament runners-up UC Irvine on Sunday, October 2 and UC Riverside on Saturday, October 8, across seven days on either side on a Wednesday, Oct. 5 visit to Cal State Fullerton.

Three of Cal Poly’s final five regular season games will be played outside of Spanos Stadium, beginning with away games against CSUN (Wednesday, October 12) and UC San Diego (Saturday, October 15) before Wednesday, October 19 , a home game against Sacramento will be held state.

Before the regular season concludes at home against CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, October 30, Cal Poly visits UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 22.


The top two programs in the 10-team Big West rankings will receive byes to the opening round of the conference tournament on Wednesday, November 2 before hosting semi-finals on Saturday, November 5. The Big West tournament championship game on Saturday, November 12 will be played with the highest seed remaining.

The first round of the 2021 NCAA championship will be held on Thursday, November 17, with rounds two and three scheduled for Sunday, November 20 and Sunday, November 27, respectively. The four quarterfinal games will be played on December 3rd or 4th The 2022 College Cup will be played on Friday December 9th and Sunday December 11th at WakeMed Park in Cary, NC.
