Lumen Field celebrates 20 years with new stadium enhancements

As today officially marks 20 years since Lumen Field opened on July 20, 2002, the Seattle Seahawks, First & Goal Inc. and Seattle Sounders FC have announced plans to celebrate Lumen Field’s 20th anniversary with major new projects to upgrade and… Upgrade to celebrate different areas in the stadium.

“As we celebrate 20 years of incredible sports and entertainment events at Lumen Field, we’re excited to reinvent and transform our guest experience,” said Chuck Arnold, President, Seattle Seahawks and First & Goal Inc. “We call it ‘upgrades’ fanovation’ – where our fans and their experience are at the forefront of our decisions. We look forward to our guests bringing to life several new innovative projects at Lumen Field over the next three years.”

“From its earliest conception, Lumen Field was designed with football in mind,” said Peter Tomozawa, owner and president of operations, Sounders FC. “The Sounders and our fans have shared a host of incredibly special moments beneath these towering arches and we hope to share many more in the years to come, both at Sounders and at FIFA World Cup matches. The stadium upgrades carried out by FGI will take on an already world-class facility and truly make it a great place where all fans will come back with memories. We look forward to seeing this work come to life over the next few years and excited to showcase this enhanced Lumen Field 2026 on the world’s greatest sports stage.”

Lumen Field renovation projects for 2022 include the following:

Cityside bars offer prime views of the field

A new 6,300 square meter premium food and beverage area called Cityside Bars will be added at the north end of the stadium. Open to all fans on Seahawks and Sounders game days, this project will transform the currently unused space beneath the stadium’s iconic Hawks Nest into a covered, open-air fan hangout with prime views of the field from below. The space features two nearly 40-foot wide bars along with 80-foot drink poles overlooking the field, an oversized outdoor gas fireplace and Pacific Northwest surfaces. The new amenities at the Cityside Bars are due to be completed by the fall, in time for the final stages of Sounders FC’s season and all playoff games.

The installation of two new North End video panels will greatly enhance the fan experience. The Mitsubishi Pixel Pitch Diamond Vision displays (39.90’hx 70.34’w) will more than double the size of previous video boards. Fans can expect to see the full 16×9 game presentation highlighted with enhanced graphics and 4K pan and zoom for highlights and replay reports. Sounders FC fans may have noticed the ongoing construction of these new video billboards on the north side of Lumen Field, which are due to be completed by the fall, in time for the final phase of Sounders FC’s season and all playoff games.

Concession upgrades for the Upper Hall

Upper concession expansions are on the way for all Seahawks games and for special Sounders FC games where the upper level of the stadium is wide open. An area titled District Market will be added at the southern end of the upper level behind the Toyota Fan Deck, offering a more modern, open-plan food and beverage experience with the opportunity for checkout-less transaction technologies. The space will also feature dining from the stadium’s neighbors in Seattle’s International District.

More details on Lumen Field Fanovation projects planned for 2023 and 2024 will be announced in the future, including:

New Tunnel Club Premium Hospitality area

Lumen Field plans to add a new pregame tunnel club. This new premium offering will provide fans with a pre-game ticketed hospitality club adjacent to the Seahawks locker room, offering all-inclusive premium food and beverage options. For Sounders FC games, this new area will replace the current Field Club.

The stadium’s Verizon Lounge is scheduled to undergo numerous renovations in the future. The current Verizon Lounge will serve as a pre-game buffet-style restaurant, with two bars available to Delta Sky360° Club ticket holders during the game. Preliminary concepts for the space transformation include the creation of two open-air standing room decks with field views, a new premium bar, and general surface improvements throughout the area.
