Area clubs take charge to create better youth soccer atmosphere | Chanhassen Sports

The phrase “It doesn’t work without referees” is becoming more and more a reality in the world of youth sports such as football.

Minnesota has seen a significant decline in the number of registered juvenile umpires over the past eight years. According to state umpire administrator Paula Hildman, Minnesota had about 4,800 registered umpires in 2014 but steadily lost between 300 and 400 for a few years. Combine that with losses during the pandemic, and Minnesota has lost nearly 46 percent of its umpires since 2014.
